Letter: What will America look like in four years?
To the Editor;
To my Conservative friends. We have just had an amazing presidential election. I’m curious to get your thoughts on what your test will be for a successful Donald Trump presidency.
If we take a snapshot right now of the economy we find that inflation is just under 2 percent, unemployment is just under 5 percent (“U6” is at 9 percent), the deficit is about 2 percent of GDP, total debt is about 90 percent of GDP.
Income inequality continues to worsen. The U.S. Gini index is at 41 (vs. 38 in 1986). On trade, will we have repealed NAFTA? Will there be new trade agreements?
We are still (formally) at war in Afghanistan. Will we be fighting any more wars in the next four (or eight) years? Will there be Middle East peace?
On health care, even with “Obamacare” we still have about 30 million people uninsured today. What will that number be in four years? Will our costs for health care go down?
On social issues, will Roe vs. Wade still be the law of the land?
Finally, the country seems to be very divided right now. Will we be getting along better in four years?
These are some of my questions. I’m sure you have some of your own tests. I welcome your thoughts.
