Custom-made awards will be presented at Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis Cruise-In on Aug. 6

DEXTER — The Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis’ second annual Cruise-In, on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 4:30-8 p.m. in the municipal parking lot, features a competition for 12 favorite cars, which represents about 10 percent of the cars present. Car owners are given the opportunity to vote for their favorite vehicle other than their own and the top nine car owners get to pick their “Cool Ride” award in order. Additionally, there are three “Choice” awards, kids’ choice, Kiwanis choice and DJ’s choice.

COVETED AWARDS Some custom-made awards will be presented at the second annual Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis Cruise-In, which will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 from 4:30-8 p.m. in the municipal parking lot downtown.

In recognition of antique and classic car owners the Dexter Sunrise Kiwanis believes that any awards earned at the Cruise-Ins must be as unique. The trophies are hand-made primarily from small car parts and hand tools and/or specially designed to fit the occasion. The awards are the Kiwanis’ way of acknowledging how special these cars are and giving thanks to the owners for participating. Kiwanis also recognizes the risks associated with weather and various road hazards when the classic cars leave the security of their garages and brave miles of open road to attend a car show. Presenting awards in this way also accents the family-oriented atmosphere of this Kiwanis event.

The awards include a refurbished 1948-52 Chevrolet hood ornament, a 1967 Camaro Z-28, a 1967 piston unique to that model car (DJ’s Choice), a 1948 Mercury water pump that is now a “planter” cleaned and clear-coated, a second 1951 Ford water pump “planter” that will even hold water for real plants and another red 1967 Camaro pops a “wheelie” beneath a vintage fuel pump. Most of the Cruise-In honors are firmly planted on hand-finished ash.
