Moosehead Trails work session set for Saturday

GREENVILLE — Moosehead Trails (MT), a group helping to maintain walking, hiking and biking trails in the greater Moosehead Lake region, will host a stewardship day on Saturday, July 16. MT is looking for volunteers and all are invited to participate.

Work will take place on the Number Four Mountain Trail in Frenchtown Township. Volunteers will gain experience clearing the trail corridor, cleaning water bars, painting blazes and installing minor drains along the 1.75-mile trail to the summit, as well as possible additional work on the trail extension under development from Number Four toward Baker Mountain. Along the way, participants will be rewarded with stunning views of Moosehead Lake and the 100-Mile Wilderness region. The hike and trail work will require moderate to strenuous effort.

The day will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the Center for Moosehead History to carpool to the trailhead and bring their own lunch, water, work gloves and bug repellant. Some tools will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to bring loppers, pruners, shovels and hand saws. The rain date is Sunday, July 17. Please contact MT Coordinator Erica Kaufmann at erica@fsmaine.org to sign up or for more information.

The Number Four Mountain work day will be hosted in partnership with the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Bureau of Parks and Lands and is part of the schedule of events for the Thoreau-Wabanki Trail Festival. Like Thoreau, volunteers will have the chance to appreciate the Moosehead Lake region from a remote and beautiful location.

MT provides opportunities to hike, learn about trail maintenance and construction and serve local communities. Find MT on Facebook for updates on the July 16 work trip and future trail stewardship events.
