June events at Thompson Free Library

By Kim Brawn

DOVER-FOXCROFT — We are gearing up for summer at the Thompson Free Library and our focus is on kids. We’ve come up with many fun programs that will keep their minds and bodies active and engaged.

But first, something for the adults, as we continue our Brown Bag Lunch Series on Thursday, June 9 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the library. Guest speaker Jackie Robinson, a fourth generation farmer from Leaves and Blooms Greenhouse in Dover-Foxcroft, will talk about “eating seasonally and four season farming.” The topic is timely, as many of us are immersed in planting and gardening, with flowers blooming and vegetables growing. So bring your lunch (if you’d like to) and your questions.

Later in the month, the kids can channel their inner scientist as Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance STEM Guide Alicia Millete teaches them how to use different types of microscopes, including a digital one. This program will be held on Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m.

Mark your calendars: registration for the children’s summer reading program begins on Tuesday, June 28. This independent reading program (featuring incentives), is open to ages 5-13, and runs through August. Kids must read for at least 15 minutes a day for at least 30 days throughout the summer.

The Summer Program Series (for kids) kicks off on Wednesday, June 29 at 11 a.m. at the library with Yoga for Kids presented by Dover-Foxcroft’s Color of Life Studio. A different program will be offered every Wednesday through Aug. 3.

That same day June 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the Thompson Free Library will be giving out free bag lunches to anyone under the age of 18. This summer lunch program, in partnership with the SeDoMoCha School and the Department of Education, will be offered every Wednesday and Thursday through Aug. 4. If weather allows, it will be held outside; otherwise, it will be moved to the library basement.

Keep in mind that the library’s regular children’s programs remain ongoing. Librarian Michelle Fagan hosts story time each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and Legos at 3:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

For more information on any of the programs (which are all open to the public), please contact the Thompson Free Library (186 East Main Street) at 564-3350 or df@thompson.lib.me.us and follow us on Facebook.
