Maine Project Learning Tree training at Gorman Chairback Lodge

GREENVILLE — The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District (PCSWCD), the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and Maine Project Learning Tree (PLT) are teaming up to present a dynamic and engaging Project Learning Tree Educator Training at Gorman Chairback Lodge on June 17-18.

Recent research on child development shows the importance of experiences in nature to child development and learning. This fun, relaxing workshop will share curriculum resources and deliver integrated lesson plans for all grades and subject areas. Attendees will discuss techniques for managing outdoor learning and work with participants to connect their curricular with place-based themes. Educators who attend this workshop will earn nine contact hours, enjoy ample networking time and hear from wonderful guest speakers. All educators including school teachers, natural resource professionals and community leaders are strongly encouraged to attend.

This workshop will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 17 and run through 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 18. This training will not only include great information about natural resource curriculum, ideas, techniques and demonstrations, participants will also enjoy full lodge accommodations including delicious meals and a comfortable stay in the lodge cabins. The information presented will combine the Project Learning Tree K-12 curriculum with STEM, NGSS and much more.

Guest presenters will include Crystal Priest, district technology Director of SAD 4 and Niloofar Yousefi from the UMaine School of Forest Resources. Priest will explore ways for educators to use iPads and iPhones in the woods. She will discuss a variety of apps for better understanding, collecting data and augmenting reality in interesting ways for learning. Yousefi will present her research in biobased advanced products, which will inspire educators to incorporate technology into their natural resource curriculum.
