Trafton Dairy Farm fire update

By Stacy Edgerly

DEXTER — On Saturday, March 5 the last working dairy farm in Dexter was a total loss as it was burned to the ground in a devastating fire. Farm owner Kenny Trafton lost approximately 35 cows, his home and all of his farming equipment. He had no insurance.

The community has been rallying around him in an effort to help him rebuild. The outpouring of support has been overwhelming.

Here is an update of what has been happening since the fire. Cleanup of the old farm is going well and is close to being finished. Donations of hay, cow grain and chicken feed have been coming in. A successful benefit dinner was held in Garland. Financial donations have been streaming in on a steady basis.

The remaining cows are temporarily being housed at a neighbor’s barn. they are settling in. Two calves have been born and six more are expected.

We are making progress! We are on our way to the ultimate goal of raising enough funds to construct a new barn so that Trafton can bring the cows home.

We continue to seek your contributions. Please send to Kenneth Trafton Fire Fund C/O Bangor Savings Bank, PO Box 308, Dexter, ME 04930.

Most importantly, the Trafton family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of generosity. They are grateful and appreciative for all of the donations and help they have received. It has truly touched everyone’s heart. More updates and fund-raising events to come.
