Foxcroft girls place third in PVC swimming championships

ORONO — Foxcroft Academy raced to a third-place finish Saturday at the 38th annual Penobscot Valley Conference girls swimming championships at the University of Maine.

The Ponies amassed 186 points to trail only meet winner Mount Desert Island (234) and second-place Bangor (188) among the 14 scoring schools in the meet.

Foxcroft scored two individual-event victories. Gabie Johnson won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 13.00 seconds, then teamed with Avery Carroll, Elena Russo and Jenna Clukey to win the meet’s final event, the 400 freestyle relay.

The Ponies were timed in a school-record mark of 3:57.57 compared to 3:57.63 for second-place Bangor in that relay, with Clukey’s anchor leg of 56.7 seconds helping Foxcroft to the victory.

Clukey also finished second in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.25 and third in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.15 and joined with Elena Russo, Johnson and Carroll to place fourth in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.99.

Carroll also finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:22.11 and led a 2-3-5 finish for Foxcroft in the 100 backstroke with a runner-up time of 1:05.26, followed closely by Alice Russo (1:06.03) and Elena Russo (1:08.14).

Johnson (59.06) and Alice Russo (1:02.06) finished second and fifth in the 100 freestyle, Elena Russo (28.07) was fifth in the 50 freestyle, and the 200 free relay tandem of Elena Russo, Madison Fadley, Chloe Waugh and Alice Russo secured an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:59.61.
