GFWC/Miosac Club learns about home safety from Fire Chief Guyotte

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Fire Chief Joe Guyotte spoke to the GFWC/Miosac Club about safety in the home. He emphasized the importance of working smoke detectors, batteries should be checked weekly. Another important thing is to not put plastic over doors and windows — people need to be able to get out.

THANKS FOR THE SAFETY TIPS Vicki Moschella, left, and Pat Jones of the GFWC/Miosac Club gave Dover-Foxcroft Fire Chief Joe Guyotte a donation after Guyotte spoke to the club about safety in the home.

Guyotte also spoke about the importance of having a fire extinguisher and told club members how to check them. (these can be refilled at the fire department). Guyotte offered to show members how to use them in the summer. He will start a fire and attendees will put it out. A carbon monoxide detector is also a good thing to have against a silent, deadly killer. If the detector shows eight or above it is time to get out.

The GFWC/Miosac Club presented Guyotte with a check for $25 for the fire department.

The meeting was called to order by President Vicki Moschella. Suzanne Raymond led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and Pledge of Allegiance. Minnie McCormick took roll call with nine members present. She then read the secretary’s report followed by the treasurer’s report by Carol Kilpatrick. Roxy McGlauflin read a thank you note from the Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis for the club’s donations to the Community Christmas project and a special note from Barb Austin for the toys the club donated instead of exchanging gifts.

Pat Jones, community improvement chair, spoke about planting a tree in the Marion Doore Park in the summer. The planting will be in celebration of the GFWC’s 125th anniversary. A plaque will accompany the tree, and members voted to use monies from the Marion Doore Fund.

Nominating committee volunteers were Suzanne Raymond, Diane Leighton and Elaine Larson. The Ice Out Contest will be discussed at the next meeting. Larson announced the art show is tentatively scheduled for April 3 and the district show will be April 9 in Bangor.

McCormick brought four Angel Pockets for Mayo Regional Hospital. McGlauflin supplied members with an address to send cards to soldiers. Leighton announced that her grandson in Alaska won an Alaska junior pool tournament and will be going for further competition in Chicago in the summer — she is very proud of his accomplishments. Kilpatrick announced that the scholarship forms are available.

The meeting was adjourned and delicious refreshments were served by Kilpatrick and Jones.
