Mary L. Johnston

 JOHNSTON, Mary L., 92, Guilford, at Dover-Foxcroft, December 24, 2015. Spring burial will be in the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.

GUILFORD – Mary L. Johnston, 92, a lifetime resident of Guilford, passed away December 24, 2015, at Hibbard Nursing Home in Dover-Foxcroft. She was born in Guilford September 15, 1923, the daughter of Elmer and Marion LaBree.

Mary graduated from Guilford High School and attended nurses training at Eastern Maine Medical Center. While in nursing school, she married Alfred “Johnny” Lawrence Johnston, the love of her life. Nursing was a lifelong career for Mary as she was a public health nurse for Piscataquis County, then later a school nurse for MSAD #4 in Guilford, retiring at age 65. Following retirement, Mary spent most of her years as a volunteer at Mayo Regional Hospital. She was a long time member of the Guilford United Methodist Church.

Mary enjoyed quilting, playing bridge, camping on the coast of Maine, and spending time with family and friends.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Alfred “Johnny” Johnston; a sister, Eloise Littlefield; brother-in-law, George Johnston of FL; and most recently her daughter, Rebecca Johnston.

She is survived by a son and his wife, Fred and Linda Johnston of Dover-Foxcroft; a sister, Anita Cole and her husband, Richard of Oakland; sisters-in-law, Kay Ruksznis and her husband, Paul of Guilford, and Bernadette Johnston of FL; brother-in-law, William Johnston and his wife, Julie of VA; three granddaughters, Maj. Jessica Kashka and her husband, Maj. Lee Kashka of CA, Stephanie Florey and her husband, Matthew of Bangor, and Sarah Lovell and her husband, Andrew Thompson of NY; and two great-grandchildren, Lauren Kashka and Noah Florey.

Special thanks to a special nephew, Frank Ruksznis and his wife, Cheryl of Sangerville for their loving care and support over the years, and to the administration and staff of Hibbard Nursing Home for their professional and compassionate care.

Friends called from 12 to 1 p.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at the Guilford United Methodist Church. Funeral services followed at 1 p.m., with Pastor Reeni Cipullo officiating. Spring burial will be in the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford. Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford United Methodist Church in Mary’s memory.
