Sydney A. Pratt

PO SydneyPrattOB MONSON – Sydney A. “The Pie Lady” Pratt, 84, died November 27, 2015, at Eastern Maine Medical Center. She was born in Lexington, MA, June 13, 1931, the daughter of Lester and Olive (Merrill) Warren.

She grew up in Taunton, MA. She moved several times with her mother, spent two years in Raynham School before going back and graduating from Taunton High. She loved to square dance, which is where she met her first husband Bob Clawson, with whom she had four children. After she and Bob separated, she moved to Willimantic, with her four children. It was here that she met and married Richard Pratt and had another child.

It was not too long before she settled into work in Monson at the Coffee Shop. She worked there five years before moving into town around 1975. She bought a home on Main Street and established a boarding home and a hiker hostel. Working with the hikers, she saw they all had a trail name, and when asked what hers was, she made up one on the spot. She liked to make pies and so she said, “call me The Pie Lady.” That name stuck and she is well known up and down the trail and all over as “The Pie Lady”. She loved cooking and feeding the hikers or whoever was around.

She is survived by her five children, Cindy and Bill Charland, Rick and Jolane Clawson, Scott Clawson, Glen and Brenda Clawson, and Joel and Nina Pratt; as well as her 29 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 12 p.m., Saturday, December 5, 2015, at the Monson Community Church, with Pastor David Ray, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Willimantic. A reception will follow at the church. Arrangements by Crosby & Neal, Guilford. For an online guest register, go to www.CrosbyNeal.com.
