Manuel R. “Mannie” Mendes
GREENVILLE – Manuel R. “Mannie” Mendes, 73, died unexpectedly October 16, 2015, in Greenville. He was born March 20, 1942, in New Britain, CT, the son of John and Hortense (Roderick) Mendes.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Cuban crisis and later was stationed in the South Pacific. Following his military service, he worked for Mayflower moving company in New Britain, later moving to Maine where he worked for Scott Paper and served with the Greenville Police and Fire Departments. In 1992, he moved to Alaska and worked with Crowley Maritime Corp. as a Tankerman until he retired in 2012.
Mannie was a member of the Columbia Doric Masonic Lodge, Anah Shrine and American Legion in Guilford. He loved music, dancing, detailing cars, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Aileen (Later) Mendes; parents, John and Hortense Mendes; and a grandson, Riley.
Cherishing his memory are his three sons, Eric Mendes and his wife, Delilah of Gulfport, MS, Jason Lamson of Alaska, and Manuel Mendes II and his companion, Amy Grant of Greenville; five daughters, Andrea Van De Wiele and her husband, Denis of Houston, TX, Marie Alcazar and her husband, David of Pearland, TX, Becky Lamson of Lincoln, NH, Melissa Carrier of Greenville, and Jaime Dallaire and her husband, Dany of Gray Court, SC; brother, Vincent Mendes and his wife, Cindy of Apache Junction, AZ; 30 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated 11 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2015, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Greenville with the Rev. Fr. Aaron Damboise celebrant. Burial followed in the Greenville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Columbia Doric Masonic Lodge, P.O. Box 141, Greenville Jct., ME 04442.
