Food cupboard receives grant

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Earlier this month Penquis presented a check for $11,893  to the Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard. The check represented donations received from local businesses, individuals and community organizations during the time Penquis served as the fiscal agent for the food cupboard. Now that the food cupboard has 501c3 non-profit status from the IRS, it is able to receive contributions directly.

After the closing of the Living Word Food Cupboard at the end of March, business leaders, concerned citizens and volunteers have been working to fill the need for food assistance and open the Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard. The Maine Community Foundation was instrumental in assisting the food cupboard in its startup and awarded several grants for the purchase of food, equipment and supplies: $2,000 from a component fund of the Maine Community Foundation, $3,480 from the Piscataquis County Fund and $6,520 from the John and Anne Urban Fund.

The food cupboard held its first food distribution last April and is now holding regular food distributions on the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 2-4 p.m at the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational  Church. It is currently serving Atkinson, Barnard, Bowerbank, Dover-Foxcroft, Sangerville and Sebec. Individuals living outside of these towns may be served if their circumstances meet certain criteria. Exceptions include a family that can’t get to their local food bank during work hours or an individual whose regularly scheduled medical service conflicts with their local food bank’s hours of operations.

Individuals living outside of the six towns served by the Dover-Foxcroft Area Food Cupboard can check with the following local food cupboards for assistance: UMC Ecumenical Food Cupboard in Milo, 943-7785; Partnership Food Pantry in Guilford and Greenville, 518-8833; New Hope Baptist, Dexter Food Closet, 924-7419; or Safe Place Food Pantry in Corinth, 299-7671.

Individuals who wish to make a donation or have questions may contact Treasurer George Barton at 564-2118 or mail donations to DFAFC, PO Box 141, Dover-Foxcroft, ME 04426-0141.
