FA, Dexter football teams seek to build on Week 3 wins

The Foxcroft Academy and Dexter football teams will go on the road in search of their second straight victories after securing their first wins of the season over the weekend.

Foxcroft (1-2) will face a significant test of its defense when it visits high-powered Old Town in the Coyotes’ homecoming game Friday night. Old Town (3-0) has averaged 38.3 points per game in its victories over Waterville, Oceanside of Rockland-Thomaston and Hermon.

The youthful Ponies used defense as the catalyst for a 20-6 Class C North victory over Waterville at Oakes Field last Friday night, yielding just 71 yards of total offense to the Purple Panthers.

Linebacker Billy Brock, seeing his first game action since suffering a broken bone in his hand during a preseason matchup against Orono, led the Foxcroft defense with 12 tackles, while his brother Brandon Brock had seven tackles, including two quarterback sacks, for coach Danny White’s club.

Freshman Hyatt Smith added a pass interception he returned 20 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Sophomore Nick Clawson, making his second start at quarterback, rushed for 27 yards and a touchdown and passed for 34 yards, while Zach Caron rushed for 79 yards, including a 43-yard scoring run.

The next afternoon, Dexter topped Orono, 48-22, in an LTC Class D North clash at Tiger Field, providing the first victory for co-head coaches Brian Salsbury and Andrew Shorey.

Dexter (1-2) jumped out to a 26-0 first-quarter lead over the 1-2 Red Riots thanks in part to an emerging passing attack directed by junior quarterback Brayden Miller. Miller finished the game with four touchdown passes and 106 total yards through the air, with two scoring strikes going to Zach White and one each to Chandler Perkins and Brandon Allen.

Tyler Beem fueled the Dexter ground game with a pair of touchdown runs, while senior fullback Bryce Salsbury also had a scoring run.

Dexter resumes action at 1-2 Bucksport on Friday night.

FA girls soccer on win streak

The Foxcroft Academy girls soccer team, which hadn’t won a match since October 2010 before its victory over Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor on Sept. 14, will take a three-match winning streak into Wednesday’s home match against Presque Isle.

The Ponies followed up their 4-2 win over the Trojans with a 5-2 victory over Dexter and a 9-2 decision over Piscataquis of Guilford last week as they continued a string of four straight home matches that concludes with the battle against Presque Isle.

Jenna Clukey has five goals and four assists during the winning streak for 3-3 Foxcroft, while Grace Bickford erupted for four goals during the victory over PCHS.
