Falcons fly past Navigators

DOVER-FOXCROFT —  When the Rowell’s Navigators and Brewer Falcons played the first meeting of the season, the two squads combined for 20 runs as Brewer won 13-7 in early July. In the matchup on the Navigators’ home field the run total was half of the previous contest, but again the Falcons came out on top, 8-2, on July 17 in the last home game of 2015 for the Rowell’s team.

RUNNING OUT OF FIELD — Rowell’s Navigators pitcher Matt Spear hustles toward his team’s dugout along the third base line during the seventh inning of a July 17 contest vs. the Brewer Falcons. Also in foul territory is catcher Brooks Law and third baseman Ryan Laffin. Brewer won the game, 8-2.

The Falcons — who improved to 11-4 with the victory over the 1-13 Navigators — led 4-0 following two and a half innings. After Zach Hagan reached base on a fielder’s choice, he got into scoring position on a groundout by Tim Mazzeo.

Brewer starter Chase Carmichael, who tossed a complete game, four-hitter, was off the mark on one pitch which rolled to the backstop and enabled Hagan to steal third with ease. Chandler Rockwell followed by dropping the ball just inside the leftfield line for an RBI-single to put the Navigators on the scoreboard, 4-1.

In the team’s next trip to the plate, the Navigators would score run No. 2. Matt Spear drew a leadoff walk and then got to second base on a throwing error from behind the plate. He ended up remaining at second for the next two batters as the Falcons had a pair of flyball outs.

With Ryan Vienneau at the plate, the infield umpire called a balk on Carmichael and Spear was able to move 90 closer to the plate after being awarded third base. Vienneau then placed the ball perfectly in shallow centerfield to drive in Spear on a single.

The game remained 4-2 until the seventh, when the Falcons doubled the team’s run total with four more runs. Carmichael then struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game.

Brooks Law and Spear handled the pitching duties for the Navigators, with Law tossing the first three innings and Spear taking over on the mound in the fourth and staying on in relief for the remainder of play.

AN EASY STEAL  —  With the baseball rolling to the backstop on a wild pitch, Zach Hagan was able to take third with ease in the third inning of the July 17 game in Dover-Foxcroft. Chandler Rockwell followed by dropping a single into leftfield to drive Hagan in for the Navigators’ first run.
