Piscataquis County Open Farm Day July 26

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is hosting the 26th annual Open Farm Day on Sunday, July 26.

Open Farm Day is an annual family adventure in which farms throughout all 16 counties open their gates to offer the public to give people an opportunity to learn about Maine’s diverse agricultural community. Many farms will have demonstrations, displays, farm-raised products for sale and animals and crops to experience.

In Piscataquis County, three farms will welcome the public for Open Farm Day. Spruce Mill Farm at 324 Sangerville Line Road in Dover-Foxcroft will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spruce Mill Farm, owned by Dustin and Natasha Colbry, is a small, sustainable farm with mixed vegetables, meat birds, laying hens, pigs, two high tunnels and a commercial kitchen. The Colbrys would like people to “stop in and meet your local farmers! Come see the animals, gardens and check out what’s cooking in the kitchen!” Samples of breads and pastries will be served. For more information, visit www.sprucemillfarm.com. and www.facebook.com/SpruceMillFarm/.

Worcesters Blueberry Farm at 356 Lyford Road in Orneville will be open from 11 a.m.  to 2 p.m. Lee and Everett Worcester have owned and operated their low bush blueberry farm for over 40 years. Every year, they harvest 35-40 acres of wild blueberries in order to provide their valued customers with “a clean, tasty, healthy and truly Maine product.” In addition to fresh berries they offer delicious blueberry jams, jellies and syrups and honey that are made in small batches, as well as blueberry BBQ sauce and blueberry vinaigrette dressing. Families who visit the farm will be able to see blueberries in the field and also how they are processed.
