Ceremony to honor slate quarry miners

MONSON — On Sunday, July 19 at 3 p.m.  the Monson Historical Society and Swedish descendants will sponsor a memorial at the Monson Cemetery located on the North Guilford Road.

A new headstone has been placed for four previously unmarked graves of Monson slate quarry miners who were without family in the area. A second ceremony will be held at a lot with an existing monument placed there by the citizens of Monson in 1884. After that date four more miners were killed in tragic accidents in the quarry. These four names have now been added thanks to generous donations received during fund-raising efforts.

This is a rain or shine event and for more information contact Estella Bennett at 876-3073.
