D-F Homecoming clarification
To the Editor:
We would just like to clear up a few rumors that seem to be going around.
The Homecoming Celebration — often mistakenly referred to as “Dover Days” — that has been held since 1997 is not being taken over by Foxcroft Academy or Center Theatre.
While they are still hosting events and activities on Aug. 1, it does not mean they are taking over the celebration.
The Homecoming Committee started back in 1996 with easily 25 to 30 members strong. However, over the years, the number has dwindled down to four to five dedicated members that just cannot pull off a full-scale celebration, as we have stated since last fall when the decision was made.
This does not mean we are giving the celebration up to another local organization. It is our intent to give the full celebration a break for two years and come back in 2017 with a full-blown celebration to honor the 95th anniversary of the marriage of the towns of Dover and Foxcroft.
It is our hope that by that time, members of our community will realize their help is needed in all aspects of this massive celebration and step up to the challenge to help us in bringing a day to remember to our community.
As for this year, there will be no parade and no street festival organized by the Homecoming Committee. However, there will still be a spectacular fireworks show beginning around dusk on Aug. 1 at Sebec Lake on the water directly out in front of the public beach on Cottonbrook Road.
In addition to the fireworks, there will be a beach party with live music, games and a concession stand operated by the Kiwanis Club with the possibility of more activities being added.
To date, the generous property owners on and around Sebec Lake, businesses, community members and organizations have donated over $3,000 to this year’s show.
To those who donated, we can’t thank you enough for your generous support!
To the others who have sent in letters of complaint in unmarked envelopes with no return address, we ask that you simply request to be removed from our mailing list or chances are pretty good, you will receive a similar letter next year!
Any questions should be directed to Sheila Bragg, Homecoming Committee (not Dover Days!) at the Dover-Foxcroft Town Office, 564-3318 ext. 1021.
Thank you for your continued support!
