AUGUSTA — The Travis Mills Foundation (TMF) is pleased to announce that the Boston Red Sox organization and the Red Sox Foundation have donated a massive lawn stencil for the new TMF retreat, located in Mount Vernon.
David Mellor, head groundskeeper at Fenway Park, worked diligently with World Class Paints (Leland, MS) to create a custom stencil of the TMF logo which will be emblazoned on the front lawn of the retreat next month.
Representing all Maine Simplicity Dealers, Briggs & Stratton Power Products Group (Wauwatosa, WI) is donating a Simplicity Conquest Yard Tractor set up and delivered by Whittemore and Sons of Skowhegan.
Staff Sgt. Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was critically injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2012 by an IED (improvised explosive device) while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries.
Since his retirement, he has become a motivational speaker as well as an advocate for veterans and amputees.
TMF is grateful to these generous companies and honored to have a touch of Fenway grace the grounds of this important future retreat for combat wounded, disabled veterans and their families.
The stencil will be set and mowed in place by the Red Sox grounds crew on Tuesday, June 9 as part of a groundbreaking ceremony. This will mark the beginning of a two year construction timetable for extensive restoration to return the property to its original glory while creating a whole new mission of service to veteran families.
Local Maine companies including Above & Beyond LLC, E.S. Coffin Engineering & Surveying, LaJoie Brothers, Augusta Fuel Co., Harriman Architects and Engineers, C. Caprara Food Service Equip., TopBuild Home Services, and Hammond Lumber Co. have partnered with TMF to begin renovations.
National companies including Lumber Liquidators, James Hardie Products, Mitsubishi Electric, FishtheSurf.com, Big Hammer, & Jarden Corp., have also generously offered to donate materials and equipment to the project.
Over $300,000 has been raised towards the $2.2 million required to complete the construction phase. TMF’s goal is to open the facility by July 2017.
The historic 1929 Maine Chance Lodge originally built and owned by cosmetics pioneer, Elizabeth Arden, was well-known for its lush gardens and manicured lawns. It will become a fitting tribute to veteran families as the nation’s first fully-accessible facility dedicated to serving their recreational and reintegration needs. The retreat will fill a vital role in recovery, camaraderie, spousal support, reconnection, and relaxation for our military heroes — a true and lasting symbol of a grateful nation.
