GFWC/Miosac Club news

By Minnie McCormick

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The GFWC/Miosac Club met at Thayer Parkway, April 7 with 13 members present.  Minnie McCormick presented Sue Mackey Andrews to speak about some of the programs Mackey Andrews is involved in. Mackey Andrews has worked with children for many years and is concerned for their welfare and learning. Many children are now being raised by their grandparents who have neither the means or energy to be doing this.  Piscataquis County is the second poorest county and the first poorest when it comes to children. Poverty does affect the brain thus lowering children’s learning power. Mackey Andrews is currently on the board of the Helping Hands with Heart, a program  striving to help with this problem.

HOW TO HELP CHILDREN — Sue Mackey Andrews, left, was the guest speaker at the April 7 meeting of the GFWC/Miosac Club in Dover-Foxcroft. She discussed some of the many ways she works to help the area’s children. Also pictured is Program Chair Minnie McCormick.

President Vicki Moschella called the meeting to order. Roxy McGlauflin led the Club Collect, American’s Creed and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Cathie Goodine took roll call and read the minutes of the last meeting with three corrections. Carol Kilpatrick gave the treasurer’s report which  will be filed for audit. Roxy McGlauflin read a letter of resignation from Betty Harvey.  She also read a letter from Greg Goodine and Ron McGlauflin thanking members for attending their syrup making demonstration.
Moschella reported on the District 3 Art Show and that two students from Foxcroft Academy took first and third prizes. Those works of art will now go to GFWC Maine Spring Convention in May for further judging.
It was reported that the Ice Out Contest netted $719 to date. This will be used to support the programs the club sponsors. The club wishes to thank all who purchased tickets.
An update was given for the annual birthday party to be held at the Lakeshore House in Monson on Wednesday, May 13.
Members turned in six Linus quilts for Project Linus Day, six Angel Pockets for the Mayo Regional Hospital nursery  and one prayer shawl. Members voted to donate $100 to Helping Hands with Heart which we learned about from our speaker Mackey Andrews.
There was some discussion regarding the food cupboard. Foods will be dispensed from the Congregational Church  for a time.
Barb Austin asked if there was a way to let absent members know what happens at the meetings. McCormick volunteered to do that since she takes notes and writes for the Piscataquis Observer.
Following the meeting, refreshments were served by Anne Cress and Roxy McGlauflin.
