Waves swim at the Y State Championships

    ORONO — The Piscataquis Regional YMCA Waves Swim Team visited the Wallace Pool on the University of Maine campus on Feb. 27—March 1 to compete against Y teams from across the state. The state meet is set up with seven different gender and age group sessions running at different times throughout the weekend. Despite fielding a small team, the Waves had many standout performances throughout the meet.

    AMONG THE STATE’S BEST — Riley Inch of the PRYMCA Waves Swim Team competes in the 50–yard breaststroke at the Y State Championships at the University of Maine.

    Julia Annis placed first overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 07.72 seconds. The senior girls 200 medley relay team of Jenna Clukey, Julia Annis, Jillian Annis and Avery Carroll raced to a second-place finish and the team record with a time of 1:57.01. Clukey also had second-place finishes in the 100 fly and 100 free. Julia Annis also had a third-place finish in the 50 free. Also receiving trophies for top finishes were Carroll for her fifth-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 back, and Peyton Wellman for his sixth-place finish in the 25 breast.
    Seniors Julia Annis and Clay Carroll were recognized at the state meet for their successful YMCA swim careers.
    Swimmers finishing in the top 16 receive points for their respective teams. Those swimmers getting points for the Waves were all the above swimmers along with Clay Carroll, 13th place in the 200 IM; Triston Green, 15th place in the 100 free; and Wellman with a 16th-place finish in the 25 free.
    Waves swimmers with personal best times at the meet were Payton Barbro, Clukey, Green, Avery Carroll, Clay Carroll, Abby Henderson, Abby Kemp, Rachel Mullis, Olivia McCorrison, Hannah Vail, Garett Cooley, Hunter Kemp, Riley Inch, Wellman, Preston Barbro, Lilley Povak, Amy Waugh and Chloe Waugh.
    The Y state championships closes out the season for most of the Waves swim team who will hold an awards banquet at the end of March. The Waves team has one swimmer, Julia Annis, swimming at YMCA Nationals to be held in Greensboro, N.C. from March 30-April 3. Annis will also swim with Avery Carroll and Jenna Clukey at the USA swimming league State Championship meet. They also competed at Maine Junior Olympics, a four day meet at the University of Maine from March 12-15.
