Swimmers smash school record in 200 medley relay on the way to fourth-place finish at PVCs

    BANGOR — Following a sweep of Washington Academy on Senior Night at the Piscataquis Regional PRYMCA on Wednesday night, Foxcroft Academy’s swimmers took to Webber Pool at Husson University Friday and Saturday for the 36th annual PVC Swimming and Diving Championship.

    A NEW POOL BEST FOR THE PONIES — The Foxcroft Academy girls 200-yard medley relay squad set a school record of 1:57.94 during the PVC championship Feb. 7 at Husson University in Bangor. The team was made up of, from left, Julia Annis, Avery Carroll, Jenna Clukey and Jillian Annis.

    The girls’ team competed on Saturday and fought their way to a very impressive fourth-place finish out of 15 teams, getting bumped from the top three by John Bapst in the final event. The Ponies finished with a score of 137 points, just behind the 143 for John Bapst.
    The day got off to an exceptional start when Avery Carroll (backstroke), Julia Annis (breaststroke), Jenna Clukey (butterfly) and Jillian Annis (freestyle) smashed the school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1 minute, 57.94 seconds — good for a runner-up finish.
    Julia Annis went on to win the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:09.99 and finish second in the 50-yard freestyle at 25.70 seconds, Clukey won the 200-yard freestyle by over 4.5 seconds in 2:06.77 and she was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:03.59,
    Avery Carroll took second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:05.23 and fourth in the 200-yard IM at 2:23.18 and Jillian Annis finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:13.91 and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle at 29.20 seconds. Chloe Waugh joined fellow freshman Clukey, Carroll and Julia Annis to pick up a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.43.
    Clay Carroll led the undermanned boys’ team to a 10th-place finish Friday night, as the Ponies picked up 22 points to place 10th of 15 schools. The senior placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.43 and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.14 seconds while also teaming with Dexter Canning, Zachary Johnson and Tony Tang to take ninth in the 200-yard medley relay at 2:21.20.
    Next up for Coach Jody Annis’ team is a trip to the University of Maine for the Class B State championship meet. Clay Carroll will compete for the boys’ team on Saturday while Jillian and Julia Annis, Carroll and Clukey have qualified for the girls’ meet on Monday, Feb. 16.
