Audubon bird count tallies
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The 115th Audubon Bird Count was held in the area on Dec. 30. The sky was clear all day with the temperature ranging from 9 to 15 degrees and no wind. The ground had two inches of snow to bare ground in spots and ponds were frozen and streams were flowing.
What was reported on Dec. 31 by the observers at feeders and in the field is as follows: bald eagle, nine; wild turkey, 47; rock pigeon, 59; mourning dove, 73; common flicker, one; red-headed woodpecker, one; hairy woodpecker, 22; downy woodpecker, 20; blue jay, 129; common raven, 24; common crow, 57; black-capped chickadee, 282; brown creeper, one; titmouse, one; white-breasted nuthatch, 13; red-breasted nuthatch, 22; starlings, 52; cardinal, three; evening grosbeak, 10; pine grosbeak, 21; common redpoll, two; American goldfinch, 69; dark-eyed junco, one; tree sparrow, six; and snow bunting, eight for a total of 25 species and 957 individuals.
The observers in the field were Tom and Mickey Creeley, Charles and Mary Dorchester, Kate Weatherby and Jill Halkin. Feeder watchers were James and Linda Anderson, Joan Clark, Ruth French, Verne and Lou Gray, Irene Hall, Mary Hall, Jeannette Hughes, Edie Hussey, Mary Rideout, Gale Robinson and Irene White.
