Dover Cove Farmers Market to celebrate Midsommer

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Join the Dover Cove Farmers Market in celebrating Midsommer on Saturday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees will be able to purchase fresh farm produce and products from farmers in the Maine Highlands.
The STEM Guides Project staff will be also be returning to the market on July 26, and with more Farmers Market Math activities for youth and families. The idea behind Farmers Market Math is to engage youth in fun hands-on learning using measuring tools, reasoning, comparing and local produce. Come figure out how many local strawberries it takes to equal the world record holder or learn to estimate the number of seeds in a tomato. Meet Clare Thomas-Pino and Alyson Saunders, two local STEM Guides, and ask about other upcoming programs.

The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District will also be there with vegetable games and activities for children. Try to identify the seeds that grow different kinds of vegetables, and receive a special gift – a bean plant or a sunflower plant to take home for the garden. The conservation district will have information about the upcoming agricultural and natural resources summer camp for ages 7-12, and registration can be done at the same time.
This year’s camp runs from July 28 through Aug. 8 and from Aug. 4-8. Children can attend by the day, by the week or for two full weeks. The summer camp gives children an opportunity to explore the county through tours to farms, forests and waterways, lively demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Maine Fare Food, a mobile food concession business that is committed to promoting local, sustainable agriculture, will also be there on July 26. Maine Fare Food is based in Piscataquis County and serves up farm fresh vegetables from the farmers market in their signature quesadilla. Other specialty menu items will be offered as well, such as coffee and bagels, black bean burgers, nachos, lemonade, maple lemonade, old fashioned milkshakes and more.
“The Dover Cove Farmers Market has farmers selling vegetables and much more,” said Janet Sawyer of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council. “It’s producers, volunteers, and organizations like these all work together to promote good health, build the local economy, and strengthen the community.”
The Dover Cove Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and every Tuesday from 2-6 p.m. through October. Customers may also order online at http://harvesttomarket.com/farmers-market/Dover-Cove-Market-Place. The farmers market is located at 1041 South Street.
