Donations sought for SAD 4 Weekend Backpack Program

GUILFORD — The Partnership Food Pantry in Guilford is seeking donations to cover the 2014/15 cost of providing 70 to 80 backpacks of food each week during the school year to children for their weekend food needs.

Entering its fifth year, the SAD 4 Weekend Backpack Program has been providing, annually, a total of 2,500 to 3,000 backpacks filled with healthful and nutritious foods for students to take home for the weekend. The program serves all grades, from pre-K to 12th grade and is aimed at children with food security needs.
The program was first piloted in 2011 in partnership with SAD 4, Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis, United Way of Eastern Maine, Mayo Regional Hospital, Penquis and other local partners. From that first week of 25 packs, the program has grown to serve around 75 students each week.
Donations may be made out to “Weekend Backpack Program” and mailed directly to Maine Highlands Credit Union, PO Box 697, Guilford, ME 04443.
