SOLAR COOKER WORKSHOP GENERATES BIG SMILES

Marissa Berry, left, and Emerald Irvin proudly display their funnel solar cooker made at the June 14 solar cooker workshop at the Abbot Memorial Library in Dexter. The workshop sponsored by the library and Dexter-Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) was taught by Ruth Fogg of Dexter.

By putting a black pot or jar with food into an oven roasting bag and then placing the bag at the center of the funnel and pointing the funnel towards the sun, they will be able to cook using the energy of the sun. Using simple items found around the home it is possible to make many types of solar cookers and ovens. According to Fogg “Solar cooking can save money and reduce the use of fossil fuels. Additionally, food doesn’t burn, it tastes better and doesn’t heat up your home in these hot summer days.”  Participants left excited to try their cookers on the next sunny day and planned to show friends and neighbors how to construct their own cookers.
