Farmers market receives $3,000 donation

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Dover Cove Farmers Market (DCFM) recently received $3,000 from an anonymous donor at the Maine Community Foundation. The market is a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization that provides structure and systems so that member farmers and producers can sell safe, nutritious, local foods; and provides a gathering place for those interested in local foods, good health and sustainable communities.

“Heightened awareness of health and local foods abounds here in Piscataquis County,” said Janet Sawyer of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council, which sponsored the DCFM application. “Maine Community Foundation funding allows DCFM to increase its impact on our community.”
The funding enables the DCFM to act as a clearinghouse for organizations with a commitment to a strong, local economy and a healthy community. Also, it also allows dedicated long-term DCFM volunteers to visit other farmers’ markets and attend regional and statewide events regarding local foods and healthy communities. The goal for the grant period of June 1 to June 1, 2015 is to increase sales for member farmers and producers by 10 percent as measured by debit, credit and EBT card sales. This reflects the growth of DCFM revenues over the 2013 season, according to Sawyer.
DCFM is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the corner of South and Pine streets in Dover-Foxcroft. DCFM accepts debit, credit, EBT cards and cash.
