Monson Snowroller Days set for Feb. 21-22

MONSON — The 39th annual Monson Snowroller Days get underway Feb. 21-22 in the lakeside community between Guilford and Greenville, with a full weekend of winter fun events.

The snowrollers, usually around six feet wide and five feet in diameter, were made primarily of oak and spruce, and were dragged by teams of oxen or horses to pack snow down on village streets.
While many New England communities used snowrollers back in the 1800s, Monson has one of the few working rigs left. It was believe to be last used in the winter of 1932-33 and was donated to the town by former Willimantic resident Paul Patterson in 1973. It’s kept in storage by the Monson Historical Society Museum and will be on display starting Saturday morning.
Friday’s schedule of events include entertainment by the General Store Jammers at the Monson Community Center starting at 6:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the “big ‘n hearty” breakfast is served at the Monson Community Church from 7-9 a.m.
Winter games take place from 9-11 a.m., and include downhill sled races, a snowshoe race, snowshoe jump rope, skating races, a photography contest, community flea market, chili contest and much more.
Snowmeister awards will be awarded after the skating games are completed.
For a complete schedule, visit the Monson, Maine Facebook page.
