Mayo presents concussion management program Aug. 8 at the Center Theatre

    DOVER-FOXCROFT — The latest developments in the diagnosis, treatment, scholastic and legal ramifications of concussions will be discussed at a free, public presentation scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Center Theatre.

    Maine has passed a law governing the care of athletes who have been thought to have suffered a concussion, and school districts have worked on policies needed to respond to that law.
    Mayo Regional Hospital has established the Mayo Concussion Clinic, a member of the Maine Concussion Management Initiative, and the hospital has worked with Foxcroft Academy to develop local, certified IMPACT practitioners.
    Mayo’s concussion management program is based on the work of Mickey Collins, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, who is recognized as a world authority on concussions. Representatives from Mayo have traveled twice to Pittsburgh to study with Dr. Collins.
    The Aug. 8 program will include introductory remarks by Edward Hannon, Mayo President and CEO; a discussion on the science and philosophy of concussions by Skip MacDonald, M.D., orthopedic surgeon with Mayo Orthopedics; on-field recognition and initial treatment of concussions, by Jackie Tourtelotte, Foxcroft Academy athletic trainer; medical treatment of concussions, by Fran Moore, director of Rehabilitation Services at Mayo, and Nicole Kane, FNP, of Mayo Orthopedics; and academic accommodations in concussion treatment, by Jonathan Pratt, Foxcroft Academy Assistant Head of School for Academics.
    The program will include a question-and-answer session with panelists, and audience members are encouraged to participate. Certificates of attendance will be available for those needing documentation of training in concussion management.
