Dexter Kiwanis’ annual Youth Fishing Event a big splash

    DEXTER — On May 28, four classes of Ridge View Community School fourth-graders participated in the third Annual Dexter Kiwanis Youth Fishing Event.
    To improve the students’ chances of catching a fish, this year’s event was moved to a private pond. The change meant that the Dexter Kiwanis Club had to purchase 25 rod and reels, as well as 130 trout to stock the pond.

    This was made possible by generous donations from the Maine Highlands Credit Union, and the Dexter Fish and Game. Toots Variety donated tackle to equip the rods as well as the worms used in fishing. Hounds for Kids donated a small package of fishing tackle to each child.
    Kiwanis and community volunteers helped bait hooks, teach casting techniques and untangle lines. In addition, Dexter Town Manager Linda Jean Briggs, Police Chief Kevin Wintle and Town Councilor Peter Haskell also helped with the instruction. Laurie Calhoun from the Dexter Fish and Game cleaned the more than 60 fish caught by the students.
    The cleaned fish were put into vacuum-sealed storage bags along with a frozen bottle of water, placed in coolers and returned to the students at the end of the school day so they could take them home.
