Boyer, Morrison run at NE track championship

    NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Foxcroft Academy senior Donald Boyer and sophomore Fern Morrison were among the contingent of Maine athletes competing in the 2013 New England Outdoor Track and Field Championship on June 8 at Willow Brook Park.

    Boyer qualified for the New England championship after winning the Class C titles in the 110 hurdles and long jump the weekend before — helping the Ponies claim the first state team track title in school history. Boyer headed to Connecticut ranked second among Maine’s 110 hurdlers and first among long jumpers from the Pine Tree State.
    On June 8 Boyer ran a time of 15.17 seconds in the 110-hurdle preliminaries, which placed him 12th in a field of 34. Boyer finished with the top time among Maine entrants, including besting Julian Nijkamp of Class A Gorham High School who entered with a higher seeded time (15.01 to Boyer’s 15.06 seconds).
    In the long jump Boyer had a distance of 21 feet, 4 inches which placed him ninth out of 31 or the highest finish for those who did not get into the event finals. Boyer’s leap of 21-04 was the best for a Maine athlete in the long jump.
    Morrison ran the 400 a week after she won the Class C title. At Willow Brook Park Morrison placed 22nd with a time of 62.84 seconds.
