Foxcroft Academy presents Rose Awards to 15 outstanding scholars
DOVER-FOXCROFT — Foxcroft Academy honored the Class of 2013’s outstanding scholars at its annual Rose Award ceremony on the afternoon of May 8. This year’s recipients are
Joshua Bombero, Jessica Curtin, Atticus Dennis, Gabrielle Henderson, Yuxin Li, Mingchuan Liu, Yue Lu, Monica Miles, Katharine Morrison, Brianna Pasanen, Alexander Stevens, Marielle Thomas, Letong Yang, Haoyao Ye and Liyang Yu.

ROSE RECIPIENTS — Fifteen Foxcroft Academy seniors were presented with Rose Awards during the annual ceremony on May 8, which recognizes the top students in the graduating class. The Rose Awards were established in 1931 when Mr. Frank G. Stone was head of Foxcroft Academy. Rose Award recipients have accumulated a GPA that places them in the top 15 percent of their class. For the 28th consecutive year, a medallion with the Foxcroft Academy seal was presented to the recipients in addition to the traditional rose. These medallions were presented on May 11 in conjunction with the induction ceremony for the second class of the Foxcroft Academy Academic Hall of Fame. Mrs. Priscilla White, former FA English teacher and librarian who retired after 36 years of service, and Mr. Robert Beek, who taught mathematics at FA for 33 years, conceived the idea for this permanent award and contributed funds to have the die cast for the medallion, which has now become a permanent part of the annual ceremony.
Joshua Bombero, son of Jennifer Foley and Paul Bombero, played soccer for four years and captained the team this year, has been a member of the tennis team for three years and is a captain this season, ran indoor track for one year, and has been part of the Latin Club since he was a sophomore. Josh will be enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.
Jessica Curtin, daughter of Cara Fuller, Greg Fuller and Brian Curtin, has been part of the Spanish Club since she was a freshman, has played the violin since she was a sophomore, and has been a member of the Orchestra Ensemble the past two years. Jessica will be attending the University of Maine, where she intends to major in Nursing.
Atticus Dennis, son of Elizabeth and Michael Dennis, has played basketball, tennis (captain this year), track, and cross country, has been part of the Key Club and Latin Club the past three years (president of both clubs this year), and has volunteered at Hibbard Nursing Home every Saturday of his high school career, helping him accumulate more than 200 hours of community service. Atticus will be studying bioengineering at the University of Maine next year.
Gabrielle Henderson, daughter of Mirna Reyes-Henderson, has been a four-year member of the field hockey, basketball, and softball teams and captained both the field hockey and softball team this season. Gabi has been the Spanish Club president since she was a freshman, is president of both the National Honor Society and the Foxcroft Academy student body this year, has been a member of Student Council, orchestra, and select choir all four years, and has served as a Peer Mediator the past three years. She was also the recipient of the Outward Bound Leadership Award her junior year and the MPA Principal’s Award her senior year. Gabi will be attending Simmons College, where she plans to major in biochemistry and play field hockey.
Yuxin (Winnie) Li, daughter of Guofeng Li and Xiaoping Yang, is the Salutatorian for the Class of 2013. She has been a member of the orchestra, math team, cheerleading team (captain this year), Latin Club, Environmental Club, and Key Club since coming to Foxcroft Academy as a sophomore. She has also served as treasurer of the National Honor Society and president of the Asian Culture Club this year. Winnie will be attending the University of Texas at Austin, where she intends to major in advertising.
Mingchuan (MC) Liu, son of Lanbo Liu and Jianqiu Wang, has played the guitar for the concert band the past three years and for FA’s newly-formed rock band this year. MC will enroll in the Division of General Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign next fall.
Yue (Henry) Lu, son of Mingju Lu and Kun Zhang, has been a member of the tennis team (captain this year), math team, and Key Club the past three years. Henry intends to major in business at Brandeis University.
Monica Miles, daughter of Katie and Ronald Miles, ran track for three years and has been a four-year member of the basketball team and the field hockey team, which she captained the past two seasons. She was a member of the Spanish Club for two years, has served in the Student Council for three years, has been a class officer for four years, and is both the vice president of the National Honor Society and the senior class president this year. Monica intends to major in biology (pre-medical track) and play field hockey at St. Michael’s College next fall.
Kate Morrison, daughter of Mia and Steve Morrison, is the chief graphic designer for The Foxcroft, FA’s biannual alumni publication, and also serves as Pine Tree Hospice’s Media Consultant, designing newsletters and other publications. Kate has played tennis, field hockey, and track, and she also brought the sport of diving to FA. She was the president of her class freshman year, is currently the vice president of the senior class, and has been a member of the Latin Club and Environmental club. Kate will be studying graphic design and computer science at Temple University next year.
Brianna Pasanen, daughter of Jane Pasanen, has been a member of the French Club, orchestra, band, and Civil Rights team. Brianna will be attending the School of Pharmacy at Husson University.
Alexander Stevens, son of Dianne Stevens, ran track for three years, joined the baseball team this spring, and played football for all four years, captaining the team this fall. He has been a member of the French Club, Spanish Club, band, and Student Council for at least three years. Alex will major in chemical engineering and play football at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute next year.
Marielle Thomas, daughter of Norma and Stephen Thomas, played soccer and joined the French club her freshman and sophomore years and has been a four-year member of the Spanish Club. Marielle will attend the University of Maine at Machias, where she intends to major in marine biology.
Letong (Martin) Yang, son of Samuel Yang and Kristina Lu, is the Valedictorian for the Class of 2013. He has completed more than 200 hours of community service and has been a member of the jazz band and orchestra for all three of his years at Foxcroft Academy. Martin plans to major in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Haoyao (Yoyo) Ye, daughter of Bin Ye and Yanping Zhou, has been a member of the Asian Culture Club and the Key Club since coming to FA as a sophomore. Yoyo will attend Indiana University at Bloomington, where she intends to major in supply chain management.
Liyang (Steve) Yu, son of Qian Yu and Bing Ye, has been a member of the math team, Asian Culture Club, Environmental Club, and Key Club for the past three years, and he also played basketball his sophomore and junior year. Steve will attend the University of California at San Diego and has yet to decide on a major.
