Dover-Foxcroft

Dover Cove Farmers’ Market opening day set for Saturday, May 18

DOVER-FOXCROFT — It’s spring! Another sure sign is the opening of farmers’ markets all over the state of Maine. Our own local market, the Dover Cove Farmers’ Market, celebrates the opening of its second season Saturday, May 18. The market will operate Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays 2-6 p.m. through October, giving local folks the opportunity to meet the people who produce fresh, healthy food right here in the Maine Highlands.

Maine is second only to Vermont in terms of our citizen’s access to locally-produced food. Being able to say you “know your farmer, know your food” is one of the great blessings of living here. Farms represented at Dover Cove Farmers’ Market are Bark-Eater Farm (Jerry Doxtader and family of Dexter), Leaves and Blooms Greenhouse (Gale and Peter Robinson and family of Dover-Foxcroft), Mapleshade Farm (Linda Clewley and family of Garland), Pike Farm (Doug and Carolyn Pike of Exeter), Rollins Orchard (Ernest and Andrea Rollins and family of Garland) and Stutzman’s Farm (Sid and Rainie Stutzman of Sangerville). Dick’s Baking (Richard LaBree of Milo) and a new wood-fired coffee roastery (Maine Highlands Coffee Roasters) will also be participating in this year’s market. Other producers are invited to apply for inclusion in the market by contacting Gale Robinson (564-7433).
Opening day will feature dynamic duo Robbie Neeb and Nik Hasenfus from 10 a.m. to noon. Their band Happy Folk has played local venues over the winter and is sure to contribute to an upbeat and festive atmosphere. Other activities and special guests will be on hand at Saturday markets occasionally throughout the season. Individuals or groups interested in entertaining and/or educating market-goers should contact Janet Sawyer at the PCEDC (564-3638).
Those in a hurry on Saturday mornings may order online through Dover Cove Marketplace (http://harvesttomarket.com/farmers-market/Dover-Cove-Market-Place). Orders placed by 7 a.m. Fridays can be picked up at the outdoor market Saturdays 10 a.m. to noon. The online market has been developing and growing through the winter, and currently offers locally produced meats as well as vegetables, cider, apples, maple syrup and baked goods.
Both Dover Cove Farmers’ Market and Dover Cove Marketplace are active on Facebook (www.facebook.com/DoverCoveFarmersMarket and www.facebook.com/DoverCoveMarketPlace). Look for photos, updates, inspiration and information about local food, farmers and the good life we share. Celebrate our community live and in person at Dover Cove Farmers’ Market Saturdays 9-1 and Tuesdays 2-6. Be healthier and happier knowing your farmer, knowing your food.
