Event will mark end of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week
DOVER-FOXCROFT — As a way to celebrate the advances made over the history of the extension of legislated rights to victims of crime, Womancare, the Piscataquis County-based organization working to end domestic violence, will acknowledge National Crime Victims’ Rights Week with a celebration planned for Friday, April 26 at the Piscataquis County Commissioners’ Room from 4-5 p.m.
The theme this year is “New Challenges, New Solutions” and despite all the gains, victims’ rights laws in all 50 states, the Victims’ of Crime Act in 1984 and the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 and more than 10,000 victim service agencies throughout the country, there are still many instances where victims’ needs go unsupported.
On April 26, Womancare will honor protectors of public safety, those who prosecute criminals, those who investigate crimes and those who provide support for victims of crime. Attorney General Janet Mills has been invited to speak along with local and county officials. The public is invited to attend and a reception will follow.
