Ponies take to the pool for PVC championship

BANGOR — At the annual Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) Swimming and Diving Championship at Husson University on Feb. 11, Foxcroft Academy senior Cameron Fadley won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.39 seconds, breaking Donnie Boyer’s school record in the process.

Fadley, who was already by far the most decorated swimmer in Foxcroft Academy history with three state titles and nine individual records, now holds every Pony boys swimming record. The senior, who was forced to compete in his next race on no rest (due to a scheduling quirk that resulted from the meet having been rescheduled due to a weekend snowstorm), was out-touched by Bangor’s David Smallwood in the 100-yard butterfly, his first high school loss since the state meet his sophomore year.

Sophomore Clay Carroll had a strong meet as well, taking third in the 100-yard breaststroke and finishing fifth out of a field of 67 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Fadley and Carroll combined for 51 points, leading the Ponies to a ninth-place finish out of 14 teams.

On Feb. 12 the Foxcroft girls took part in the PVC Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Maine, Julia Annis outraced a field of 107 swimmers to become the 2013 PVC champion in the 50-yard freestyle and also bested the field in the 100-yard breaststroke, setting a school record with a time of 1 minute, 8.89 seconds. The sophomore led a strong cast of young swimmers to 121 total points, good for a tie with Orono for fourth place out of 13 teams.

The future looks very bright for coach Jody Annis’ Ponies. Freshman Avery Carroll was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke and finished third in the 200-yard IM.

Fellow freshman Gabie Johnson placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke and took fifth in the 200-yard freestyle, and Johnson, Annis, Carroll and sophomore Jenny Boyer finished third in the 200-yard medley relay.

Freshman Madison Fadley was also very competitive, finishing 11th out of 89 swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke, while Boyer qualified for the state meet with a 12th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and was also 12th in the 100-yard freestyle.
