After jumping out to a 12-point lead in the first quarter of the 2018 Class D South championship on Feb. 24 at the Augusta Civic Center against Arthur R. Gould High School of South Portland, the Greenville High School boys saw the team’s advantage slowly shrink and then disappear in the third quarter. But the Lakers responded in a big way during the fourth quarter with a 13-1 run and 16-3 advantage in the final 8-minute session to win the regional title for the second year in a row against the Bears.

Foxcroft Academy wrestlers Elijah Ames and RJ Nelson both earned berths in this weekend’s New England championship competition with their performances at the 2018 New England Qualifier on Feb. 24 at Nokomis Regional High School.

The Miss Maine Basketball semifinalist used the move to nail a game-tying 3-pointer from the left side with 24.1 seconds remaining in regulation and her free throw with 2:18 left in overtime broke a 30-30 tie, enabling the top-seeded Shires to survive a stiff test from the youthful Dexter Tigers 33-30 in their Class C North championship game Feb. 24 at the Cross Insurance Center.

The 11th-seeded Calais High School girls basketball team entered the Feb. 23 Class C North semifinal against second seed Dexter averaging 64.8 points per game. Its season low was 48 in a loss to undefeated Houlton on Jan. 10. But Dexter turned in a smothering defensive performance, limiting the Blue Devils to a 19.4 percent shooting performance en route to a 36-15 victory at the Cross Insurance Center.

The Maine Association of Basketball Coaches recently announced that six players from the region have been chosen for the 2018 Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Games on Saturday, March 10 at Newman Gymnasium on the campus of Husson University.

Some halftime adjustments, and a big second half by senior Isaac Cyr, helped give Fort Fairfield a come-from-behind 64-60 victory over PCHS on Feb. 21 in Class C North quarterfinal play at the Cross Insurance Center.

Foxcroft Academy senior Jenna Clukey recorded a pair of top six finishes in two freestyle races at the Class B swimming championship on Feb. 19 at Bowdoin College.

The Cross Insurance Center has been like a home away from home for the Houlton High School girls basketball team. On Feb. 20 the top-seeded Shiretowners improved to 10-0 in regional play at the facility with a resounding 65-26 Class C North quarterfinal victory over No. 8 Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford.

The Dexter Tigers’ mix of seniors with tourney experience and freshmen with loads of talent provided just the right blend for their Class C North quarterfinal on the morning of Feb. 20.

Junior Zac Wilson of Piscataquis Community High School has been on a mission all year long, to win a state wrestling championship. This journey started immediately after his season ended too early at last year’s regional tournament where Wilson reached the 160-pound consolation semifinal round.

Wells ended up repeating as state champions (winning the crown for the fourth time in school history) as the Warriors scored 121 points to Foxcroft’s 105.5. Following in third place was Mount View High School of Thorndike at 73 points and tied for fourth place was Dexter and Medomak Valley High School of Waldoboro with 72.5 points apiece.

Several members of the Foxcroft Academy boys and girls basketball teams received postseason recognition from the Big East Conference.

For the boys basketball team at Piscataquis Community High School, they also reflect a chance to move on to the Cross Insurance Center after the seventh-seeded Pirates made 12 of 14 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter to hold off No. 10 Bucksport 59-55 in a Class C North preliminary-round game Feb. 14.

The No. 5 Warriors defeated No. 12 Dexter 68-47 in a Class C North prelim on Feb. 14 to earn a quarterfinal date against No. 4 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill on Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Bangor.

Houlton (18-0 during the regular season) easily beat a depleted Dexter squad 42-13 for the league title. The league championship pits the top two PVC teams in Class C.

Foxcroft Academy senior Jenna Clukey captured the 100-yard freestyle title at the Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) championship on Feb. 10 at the University of Maine. Clukey swam the 100 free in 55.19 seconds.

The Foxcroft Academy wrestling team has been a force in the eastern/northern region for the last 20 years. Now the Ponies have won three straight Class B North titles -- and six of the last eight regional crowns as well as 11 in 17 years under head coach Luis Ayala -- after finishing in first place at the 2018 competition on Feb. 10 at Mount View High School. The Ponies earned 191.5 points, over 80 more than runner-up Dexter Regional High School with 109 points.
