Athletes from both SeDoMoCha Middle School in Dover-Foxcroft and Piscataquis Community Elementary School of Guilford brought home medals in the sprints at the 2018 Almquist Middle School Championships held May 21 at the University of Maine.

Ten entrants took part in the Three Rivers Kiwanis Club of Milo/Brownville’s annual Sebec River Canoe Race on May 19. Paddlers put their craft in the water in Sebec Village and they raced down river to near the boat docks in downtown Milo.

The area’s track and field teams all had final meets before this coming weekend’s postseason competitions.

The third annual Moose Mainea 5K and 10K road races, to benefit Destination Moosehead Lake, were held Saturday, May 19.

Seems like everyone is pulling out dams these days. It certainly makes sense in areas where anadromous fish species have been prevented from accessing important spawning and nursery habitat. These fish have been severely impacted by dams with no fishways.

All you salmon slayers, save the date. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is partnering with Natural Resource Education Center at Moosehead (NREC) to organize the first Chesuncook Lake Salmon Derby on Memorial Weekend this year.

Fourteen hits coming from each member of the starting lineup and runs scored in five of seven innings helped Greenville High School earn a 14-3 victory at Piscataquis Community High School during a May 9 interclass contest.

Players, coaches, teams and individuals who have made significant contributions to the Piscataquis Community High School athletic program and/or past educational institutions in towns that today are part of SAD 4 will have the opportunity to be honored in the newly-formed PCHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

After visiting Mount Desert Island High School took its first lead of a May 5 Class B North softball Saturday matinee during the top of the fifth inning at 4-3, Foxcroft Academy responded with an even bigger inning. The Ponies scored five times in the bottom of the fifth and the five-run outburst helped the team hold on for the 8-4 victory to improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.

The Dexter Regional High School boys finished fourth among a field of seven teams during a May 4 meet at Bucksport High School. The Tigers scored 66 points.

The public is invited on Saturday, May 19 for the annual Three Rivers Kiwanis Sebec River Canoe and Kayak Race. Registration is at Sebec Village Reading Room from 8:30 until 9:45 a.m. The race starts promptly at 10 a.m. as participants will travel to the boat launch in Milo.

Two days before Memorial Day and the annual mid-morning parade through downtown Dover-Foxcroft, American Legion Post 29 will honor the service and sacrifice of veterans with the inaugural five kilometer (3.1 miles) Warrior Race & Fun Run at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 26.

Trailing 4-2 to start the seventh inning of an April 27 Class C North softball contest, Penquis Valley High School nearly came back after scoring a run and then loading the bases with one out. A pitching change for the host Dexter Regional High School worked to perfection as Tiger freshman Avery Herrick recorded a strikeout and induced a ground ball out as the team held on for a 4-3 win and its first victory of the young season.

The Maine Baseball Hall of Fame will welcome its new members during its 48th annual induction ceremony and banquet scheduled for Sunday, July 22, at the Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland. Dave Gaw of Guilford, who was selected last year but was unable to attend, also will be inducted.

Due to unsafe water levels on the Piscataquis River with a lot of debris flowing in the water, the 2018 Dover-Foxcroft Kiwanis Piscataquis River Race has been postponed from April 28 to Saturday, May 26. Plans are for the 46th annual event to also start at 10 a.m. on the new date -- with registration beforehand -- as paddlers will travel from King Cummings Park in Guilford down to Dover-Foxcroft across the West Main Street from Foxcroft Academy.

The Dexter Regional High School girls track team placed third in a field of five schools with a score of 33 points during an April 26 meet at Ellsworth High School.

With Maine’s American Legion baseball ranks continuing to be thinned by the popularity of regional travel baseball programs, state American Legion baseball officials have held frequent planning sessions in an effort to adapt to the sport’s changing summer landscape.

After a trip to the Class B North semifinals last year, a veteran Ellsworth High School baseball team again is showing the characteristics of a contender early this spring. Coach Dan Curtis’ club rode the two-hit pitching of junior right-hander Conner Wagstaff and an offense that produced all of its runs with two outs to a 7-0 victory over Foxcroft Academy in a Penobscot Valley Conference matchup Saturday, April 28.
