On Saturday, May 6 the Piscataquis Regional YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active at the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and wellbeing for kids and families.

Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) will host its monthly free public discussion group at the Abbott Memorial Library from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 5. Palmyra’s Pegg Gannon and St Alban’s Liz Breault, both long-time DDATT supporters and plant growers, will lead the group in three requested areas “Gardening as We Get Older”, “New Garden Pests” and “Growing Berries.”

At the Central Conference (Zone 3) on April 20 at the Penquis Valley School in Milo, Rowell’s Garage bus driver Mike Chargin took home the second-place trophy.

The Teen Wilderness Expedition is a 3-day, 2-night trip for ages 12-16 to AMC’s Medawisla Lodge, from Tuesday, July 11 to Thursday, July 13. On this trip, youth will get a chance to explore Medawisla, AMC’s brand new lodge, all while enjoying fun outdoor recreational activities and experiencing the diverse and expansive natural resources that we depend on in Piscataquis County.

Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union held its annual meeting on April 17 and awarded over $11,000 to area food organizations. Funds awarded were a result of ongoing fundraising efforts for the Maine Credit Union Campaign for Ending Hunger.

Pine Tree Hospice will host a workshop to help individuals and families navigate planning for later life. Kim Cavanagh, Esq. will present “Elder Law” on May 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Charlotte White Center at 572 Bangor Road.

Guitarist Denny Breau performs on Saturday, April 29 at 7 p.m. at the Wayside Theatre. Breau’s rhythmically flawless and dazzlingly clear guitar style allows him to mix folk, Delta blues, country and jazz with ease.

Tisbury Manor Chapter DAR held its first meeting of 2017 on April 9 at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover Foxcroft. The meeting was a planning session for the upcoming year

The Canadian Pacific Railway Depot in Greenville Junction, Piscataquis County, has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places, according to Kirk F. Mohney, director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. This designation indicates that the property has been documented, evaluated and considered worthy of preservation and protection as part of the nation's cultural heritage.

One of the events the Three Rivers Kiwanis of Milo/Brownville looks forward to participating in is Jean’s Blessings. Originally called Blessings in a Backpack, Jean’s Blessings started in Milo in 2009 in memory of one of the founders and owner of JSI Store Fixtures, Jean Johndro. JSI donates $2,000 every April school vacation week for food that the students bring home.

As part of Better Speech and Hearing Month, certified audiologist Chris Clukey, MA, CCC-A, of Dover Audiology, will speak about age-related hearing loss, its causes and treatments, as well as other kinds of hearing loss experienced by older adults, at the Abbott Memorial Library in Dexter on Thursday, May 11 at 1 p.m.

Caring for a loved one who has Alzheimer’s or another dementia is a daunting, overwhelming endeavor. Caregivers need help to learn how dementia is affecting their loved one’s behavior. They need strategies for communication and knowledge about challenging behavior management. Caregiving can lead to loneliness and depression. The Eastern Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring the popular SAVVY Caregiver training in Brownville, Corinna and Greenville beginning in May. The six-week SAVVY trainings are a total of 12 hours during May, June and July.
