The next Dover and Foxcroft Water District trustees meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 13 by video conference call.

More than three weeks after Maine confirmed its first case of the new coronavirus, the state has recorded cases in all but one of its 16 counties. As of Monday, Piscataquis County was the only one without a confirmed case of the fast-spreading infection that has caused a pandemic and shut down much of daily life. Two other counties, Aroostook and Washington, both recorded their first cases last week.

The death toll started on a Monday -- Sept. 23, 1918, to be exact. William Lawry, a 36-year-old Augusta resident, had fallen ill while visiting Camp Devens, an army facility in Massachusetts that had been stricken by influenza, and had returned home a few days earlier to recuperate. 

Will Wedge arrived at work on March 12 anticipating a typically busy Thursday at his grocery store in downtown Dover-Foxcroft. What he got instead was his first glimpse of a brand new world for grocers large and small as the coronavirus pandemic arrived on America’s doorstep.

At a University of Maine commencement years ago, a good friend, Al, received his Ph.D. and was “hooded” by my husband, his adviser. When Al’s name was called he made his way painfully across the stage on crutches, losing his mortarboard on the way. The entire audience let out a spontaneous “Oh.” Al received the loudest applause of the afternoon.

The day dawned gray and blustery -- not ideal for fishing, but sadly par for the course when it comes to early season fishing outings -- and I struggled to find and gather all the gear I'd need for my personal opening day of open-water season.

Monson is one of three Maine towns that will receive support from the National Main Street Center to develop networks in their communities to foster entrepreneurship and innovation. Monson, Skowhegan and Lisbon were selected to participate in the Community Entrepreneurship Program through a competitive application process managed by the Maine Community Foundation in partnership with Maine Development Foundation’s Maine Downtown Center.

With students learning remotely through at least the end of the month, SAD 46 staff are working hard to serve the pupils during the coronavirus pandemic. SAD 46 school board members learned more during an April 1 meeting conducted via Zoom, a web-based video conferencing system.

BROWNVILLE — Brownville Community Church, beginning on Easter, will ring its church bell at noon every day to call the people to pause and take a moment to pray for the end of the virus and to restore the health of the people afflicted with the disease.

With 9,053 coronavirus deaths as of the start of April, Spain trailed only nearby Italy among nations with the most fatalities stemming from the current global pandemic. That grim reality leaves 14-year-old Lucia De Villota uneasy.

The crisp connection between bat and ball was one of the chief selling points for a Shirley company as it returned to spring training sites in Florida and Arizona to market their bats to major- and minor-league baseball players. As many Mainers struggle to figure out how to work from home and adhere to social distancing guidelines while still getting their jobs done, the state's wildlife biologists have largely been able to complete field research projects with only slight adjustments, according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's wildlife division director.

To provide an extra measure of protection for employees at Northern Light Mayo Hospital, and a safeguard for others working out in the community during the coronavirus pandemic, volunteers have gotten together remotely via Facebook to sew protective masks.

One additional new program available to people in the region who are self-isolating at home or anyone who is having trouble doing grocery shopping due to concerns about risk, illness or disability is called Community Pulling Together. This is a program funded partly with a small grant from The New England Grassroots Environment Fund COVID-19 response program awarded to The Commons Energy Collaborative.
