Moosehead Trails ends season at Big Moose Mountain

On Sept. 9 Moosehead Trails (MT) wrapped up its public work events for 2016 on one of the region’s major landmarks, Big Moose Mountain.

Volunteers collaborated with staff from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Bureau of Parks and Lands to clean drains, remove blow-downs and clip back branches from the trail corridor. The group also opened up a new scenic vista. The vista is located above the former fire warden’s cabin and offers a spectacular view west to Bigelow Mountain.

Thanks go to the volunteers who helped out at Big Moose, and to everyone who took part, this year. MT completed four volunteer trail stewardship trips in 2016.

Although MT has completed its schedule of events for the season, the group will continue to meet throughout the winter and plan for 2017. Anyone interested in getting involved in trail stewardship in the Moosehead Lake region is welcome to join. MT is a group of volunteers who help maintain walking, hiking and biking trails in the greater Moosehead Lake region. MT provides individuals and groups with opportunities to hike, learn about trail maintenance and construction and serve local communities.
