PCHS and FA tennis players qualify for state tourney

BANGOR — Two members of the Piscataquis Community High School girls tennis team and Kazuyuki Kawashima of the Foxcroft Academy boys squad have qualified for the state singles tourney after their performances at the Region 1 qualifying round on May 14 at Bangor High School.

PCHS’ Lucinda Wingert earned the berth with a 6-0, 6-3 qualifying round victory over Ali Hardy of Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln. Alanna Whitney of PCHS advanced after she defeated Sammi Ireland of Penobscot Valley High School of Howland, 6-3 and 6-1, in the the qualifying round.

Wingert and Whitney are two of 11 qualifiers from Region 1 for the next round, scheduled for Friday, May 27 at Lewiston High School. Wingert will be seeded second and Whitney will be seeded eighth.

In the boys’ competition, Kawashima had a 6-4, 6-1 win over Tom Szewczyk of host Bangor in the qualifying round to earn a trip to Lewiston later in the month. Kawashima earned the ninth seed for the next round of the state singles tourney.

Also taking part in the Region 1 matches was Cidney Pratt and Savannah Tilley of Dexter Regional High School and Foxcroft Academy’s Alice and Elena Russo. Boys’ competitors included Nicholas Hershbine and William Strauch of Dexter, Toby Hogfeldt and Bojia Yang of Foxcroft and PCHS’ Dillon Drew, Jarrod White and Jason Willard.
