American Flag ColorPOSH PaulHamlinOBPRESQUE ISLE – Dr. Paul S. Hamlin, M.D., 83, died peacefully April 13, 2016, at home in the presence of his children and wife. He was born at home in Milo, on April 23, 1932, to Jean Paul Hamlin and Marguerite Houser Hamlin.

He attended Franklin and Marshall College and received his medical doctorate at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1958. During his internship at Eastern Maine General Hospital, he met Jean Pettengill, his wife of 56 years.

He served his country as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force where he worked with the Thunderbirds. He enjoyed flying with the test pilots, who tried unsuccessfully to “get the doc” with their high-G maneuvers. Following his time in the Air Force, he studied general and urologic surgery at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. In 1966, Paul and his family moved to Presque Isle where he enjoyed a successful urology practice for almost 30 years. He was well-loved by his co-workers and patients alike. Paul eventually served as the Vice President of Medical Affairs at the Aroostook Medical Center before his retirement in 1997.

He had great interest in the library in Presque Isle, and served on the board of directors for several years. Paul had dozens of hobbies and interests, including: photography, backpacking, woodworking, snowmobiling, geology, blacksmithing and working on the family’s camps.

Together with his friend, Julian Turner, he built a sailboat and sailed it often on Mattawam-keag Lake. Through his thoughtful teaching, his children learned the value of working with their hands and the confidence to tackle new challenges. While often soft spoken, he enjoyed loud noises and had been known to signal dinner at the camps with a muzzle loading cannon.

Paul is survived by his wife, Jean; his brother, Arthur Hamlin and wife, Marianne; his sister-in-law, Jane Arthur; his children: Debora Watson and husband, David of Sudbury, MA, and their children, Benjamin and Amanda; Eric Hamlin and his wife, Taylor of Portland, ME; Mark Hamlin and his wife, Valerie of Burlington, VT, and their children, Emily and Rachel; Gregory Hamlin and his wife, Louise of Presque Isle, and children, Christopher and Martha; and his brother-in-law and close friend, Herbert Pettengill. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as friends including George Higgins of Presque Isle, and Eddie McGraw of Mars Hill.

There will be no funeral, however a private memorial service will be held by his family. Those who wish may donate in his name to the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library of Presque Isle, or the Presque Isle Congregational Church. For online condolences please visit www.bowersfuneral.com.
