Sen. Davis proposes naming bridge after Capt. John ‘Jay’ Brainard

AUGUSTA — On Feb. 9 State Sen. Paul Davis (R-Piscataquis) was scheduled to present his legislation to name the bridge on Stagecoach Road crossing the Piscataquis River between the towns of Atkinson and Sebec as the Capt. John “Jay” Brainard Gold Star Memorial Bridge.

LD 1571, “Resolve, To Name a Bridge between Atkinson and Sebec the Captain John ‘Jay’ Brainard Gold Star Memorial Bridge”, directs the department of transportation to rename the bridge in honor of the late Capt. Brainard, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2012. It also directs the department to erect appropriate signs on both sides of the bridge.

“Renaming this bridge ensures that the memory of Capt. Brainard’s life and his sacrifices will live on forever in our community,” said Sen. Davis. “We cannot afford to forget what he, and so many others, have given to secure our freedoms.”

Capt. Brainard was born in Newport and later lived in Atkinson.
