Special town meeting

For airport taxiway project scheduled for Jan. 27

GREENVILLE — The selectmen scheduled a special town meeting for Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. in the municipal building meeting room for the purpose of seeking permission to borrow the necessary funds for the local match portion of an airport taxiway project. The special session was scheduled during an Jan. 6 meeting of the selectmen, and they will also hold a public hearing on the project Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

In this town manager’s report to the board, John Simko wrote the year before the selectmen struggled to field a budget committee to review and to comment on proposed appropriations. At the time one committee member recommended abolishing the working group due to a lack of interest by the public.

A public hearing was held once a draft of the town meeting warrant was prepared and “I think this public hearing worked well to educate the public and to the allow the selectmen feedback prior to finalizing the warrant,” Simko wrote. “I intend to bring this forward on the Jan. 20 selectmen’s meeting agenda with a recommendation to not appoint a budget committee but rather to hold at least two public hearings prior to completion of the budget (perhaps one for the school budget, with agreement by school officials, one for municipal appropriations, and a third for the draft town meeting warrant. The hearings would be spread out over 45-60 days’ time). I think that would be more effective than the traditional budget committee.”

The selectmen also approved a poker run license for the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce’s Sno-Fest Celebration scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13. The run will be conducted around Moosehead Lake.
