VOLUNTEER GREEN THUMBS — Volunteers spent time working at the garden space at the SeDoMoCha School in Dover-Foxcroft, completing much of the work on Sept. 24. Work including removing the fence, weedwacking, building two additional beds, adding compost to all, weeding existing beds, installing weed barrier and wood chips between the beds and resetting the fence.

Many materials were donated by volunteers with special thanks to Lovell’s Hardware and Engstrom and Tumosa Tree Service. The volunteers — most of whom serve on the Piscataquis County UMaine Extension Executive Committee — were, from left, Janet Yelch Weatherbee, Georgia Underwood, George MacKay, Dottie Hadler, Sheila Norman and Richard Neal, as well as Walter Boomsma. Trisha Smith, home horticultural aide with Piscataquis Extension will be assisting with the garden throughout the year. The garden has been a project of teacher David Murray and his second-grade students for the last few years.

“This is a wonderful example of what can be accomplished by a handful of energetic and enthusiastic people with purpose,” Boomsma said. “It’s been fun and exciting to do this for the kids, giving them an opportunity to learn about plants and gardening and develop some life skills.”
