Church hosts hymn sing

  BROWNVILLE JCT — On Sunday, Sept. 13 churches from the region were invited to participate in a hymn sing at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church. The invitation asked participating churches to submit two or three of their favorite hymns which would be added to the program. In addition the churches were invited to have a group from their church lead the group in singing those songs.

“It has been many decades — if ever — that the churches in the Milo-Brownville area have gathered together just to praise God through music,” said organizer Susan Worcester.

Nearly 40 people gathered representing the Park Street Methodist Church, Milo Baptist Church, Brownville Community Church, Brownville Junction Methodist Church and St. John’s in the evening to bring their voices together in song. The program opened with prayer and psalms by Fr. Kevin Holsapple, the vicar at St. John’s. The Notables, an area singing group, led the first few hymns followed by members of the Park Street Methodist Church. From then on the group didn’t need anyone to lead them. Indeed, a joyful noise was made as the group sang for over an hour enjoying the music they love. Edwin Treworgy led the final two pieces “God Bless America” and “Let There Be Peace on Earth”.

A love offering was taken to benefit the Milo Area Food Cupboard and over $200 was raised. During this break, Treworgy talked about a new group that he would like to see organized — an area chorus. This group would meet sometime this fall to organize, their purpose being bringing music to places like area nursing homes and singing for the benefit of the community. For example, to raise money for the food cupboard or other area needs.

Refreshments and conversation were enjoyed after the hymn sing. It is hoped that this will be a recurring event in the Milo-Brownville area.
