DEXTER — A goal in each half and a shutout by the defense helped the Dexter Regional High School girls soccer team earn a 2-0 victory Saturday morning vs. Class C North regional rival Penquis Valley High School, a contest pushed back a day due to inclement weather.

PUTTING HER BEST FOOT FORWARD — Dexter freshman Danielle Cummings controls the ball along the sideline to get it away from Penquis freshman Camryn Rolfe during a game in Dexter on the morning of Sept. 12. Cummings scored on a penalty shot in the second half to help her team win 2-0.
With a little more than 11 minutes to go to in the opening half, Dexter senior Skyler Theodore put the ball in play on a corner kick from the right — the Tigers’ fifth such play of the first 40 minutes and part of a 9-1 corner kick edge. Dexter was able to keep the ball at the Penquis end of the field as freshman Addyson Herrick corralled it outside of the box on the right.
Herrick passed around a defender to give the ball to Theodore who then went at the goal. Theodore ended up in a one-on-one play with Patriot junior keeper Jordan Durant. Durant briefly touched the ball but Theodore then kicked it in to put her team on the scoreboard at the 10:27-mark.
Dexter added another goal in the second half. Nearly five and a half minutes after the break the Patriots were called for a handball and Tiger head coach Jody Grant opted to have freshman Danielle Cummings take the shot awarded to the Tigers.
With the rest of the players looking on behind her, Cummings took a few steps back to get a running start before kicking the ball. She aimed for the top left of the goal and got the ball inside the post for goal No. 2.
Dexter junior keeper Reaghan Patterson made five saves for the shutout as the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season. Durant stopped a game-high 12 shots for Penquis (1-1).
The two teams are scheduled to play again, in Milo, on Monday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m.
