Skeleton Crew to host Sharon Brooks

By Beth Ranagan

DEXTER — During the next Skeleton Crew meeting at the Abbott Memorial Library on Aug. 7 at noon, Sharon Hopkins, local food and nutrition educator, will speak.

A resident of Ripley for most of her adult life, Sharon is well known to many in the tri-county area. With her degree in home economics, she worked for 16 years at the Piscataquis County UMaine Cooperative Extension and for nine years at the Somerset County Extension helping those with limited income to meet their food and nutrition needs.  She has taught the elements of good nutrition to youth in schools and summer programs and to groups of seniors in a variety of settings.

Sharon’s presentation on Aug. 7 will focus on calcium and ways to absorb it. She will also speak about rating the risks of osteoporosis, understanding food labels with respect to calcium, and evaluating the kinds of calcium supplements available. Attendees should plan to enjoy a refreshing, bone-healthy treat. The public is invited, and new members are always welcome.

The Skeleton Crew is dedicated to helping and supporting people in their efforts to learn more about how to preserve bone density and reverse osteoporosis using food, exercise, and an overall healthy lifestyle. For more information, call Librarian Liz Breault at 924-7292.
