Law office marks 126 years serving Piscataquis County

    The past year has been an eventful one for C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A., known locally as “Hayes Law Office.” C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. reached its 126th year of providing legal services to Piscataquis County and the surrounding region, and the law office’s third attorney Benjamin K. Cabot, Esq. will soon mark his first full year with C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A.

    Over the last near 12 months Cabot has rapidly grown his litigation practice by offering a broad range of legal services. Cabot’s practice is specialized in the areas of personal injury and workers’ compensation as well as all aspects of civil, criminal and family law.
    Cabot, a native of Dover-Foxcroft, is joined by Tonya H. Johnson, Esq. who has been with C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. for 21 years, joining after graduating from Suffolk University Law School in Boston, and Neil H. Hamlin, Esq. Hamlin practiced primarily real estate and title insurance for 30 years at his own practice in Milo before merging with C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. in 2006. This fall Hamlin will reach 40 years practicing law in Piscataquis County.
    Johnson and Hamlin have been pleased to have Cabot on board, saying he has been a great addition to the firm.
    “We represent over 90 local businesses,” Johnson said. “We serve as their clerk or registered agent. We make sure the corporate books are kept up to date and we are available for any legal services they may need,” she said. Johnson added that “we have a substantial estate planning and probate practice that I primarily handle as well.”
    Johnson recently became District Seven (Piscataquis and Somerset counties) Governor on the Maine State Bar Association’s Board of Governors. “I represent the lawyers in these two counties for the Maine State Bar Association,” she said. “I advocate for the counties in my district.”

    “We couldn’t do it if it wasn’t for our experienced paralegals,” Johnson said. Tami Ogden has been with C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. for 31 years this year, while Amanda Sickles has been with the firm for 20 years.
    Last fall Michaela Richardson of Sangerville joined C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. as the firm’s newest paralegal. Richardson graduated from Husson University in May 2014 with her Associate’s Degree in paralegal studies. The six work very well together to meet the needs of all the C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. clients.
    For much of its history, C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. was owned by a member of the Hayes family, with Stuart E. Hayes serving as the third generation of legal practitioners. The family ownership chain came to an end in 1998 when Johnson became the sole owner. “We kept the name because of the commitment to those who came before,” Johnson said. She added that many clients have remained with the firm from when it was still owned by the Hayes family.
    Today C.W. & H.M. Hayes, P.A. continues well over a century of community involvement, supporting a number of local organizations.
