Credit union building new office

   GREENVILLE — The Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union branch in Greenville will have a new home by June 2017, according to CEO Rhonda Taylor.
   The credit union has purchased the former Blue Loon Café on Pritham Avenue, demolished the building and will start from scratch next spring. “We really need more room and we also don’t have a drive-up window or ATM where we are now,” Taylor said. “The new location will also be close to the hospital and school, which are the town’s two biggest employers.”

   The credit union has been at the Indian Hill Trading Post plaza since 1997.
   Taylor said the floor plans haven’t been completely finalized, but the office will be set up similar to their Brownville branch with three inside tellers and a drive-up window. The Brownville office opened in 2010.
   The new location won’t be the first time that a financial institution has occupied the lot. Border Trust Company had a branch at the site for several years until it closed in 2004. It later became a convenience store until the Blue Loon Café opened a few years ago.
   Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union was organized in 1966 to serve employees of Dexter Shoe Company; and for the first four years of its existence, the office was located right in the factory.
   Eventually, the credit union expanded into Guilford and Dover-Foxcroft and now serves all of Piscataquis County plus the towns of Brighton, Cambridge, Charleston, Corinna, Dexter, Exeter, Garland, Harmony, Mayfield, Ripley, Rockwood and Stetson.
   “We’re growing by leaps and bounds and we have a strong and loyal customer base in Greenville,” Taylor said.
