FA’s Jarrett earns berth in Class B cross country championship
BELFAST — Foxcroft Academy sophomore Runner Jarrett earned a berth in the upcoming Class B cross country championship by virtue of his performance in the Class B North meet at Troy Howard Middle School on Oct. 22.
Jarrett covered the 5K course in a time of 17 minutes, 57.06 seconds. This was good for 12th place among a field of 81 entrants.
The top 20 individual finishers earn spots in the state meet, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland.
Foxcroft junior Zachary Peirce came in 60th at the regional final with his time of 21:36.02. He and Jarrett both ran personal best times on Saturday.
Mount Desert Island High School senior Sam York won the race in 16:36.46, by more than nine seconds.
John Bapst Memorial High School of Bangor earned top team honors with 40 points, best among eight full squads. Also earning state championship slots was runner-up MDI with 63 points, 95 for Ellsworth High School, 100 for Cony High School of Augusta, and 103 for fifth-place Caribou High School.
Foxcroft senior Anna Raynes ran in the Class B North girls championship. Raynes finished 35th among 80 runners with her time of 25:05.05.
MDI sophomore Amelia Vandongen came in first in 18:28.74, besting the runner-up by about 48 seconds.
She helped MDI earn the girls’ title with 56 points, well ahead of Cony’s 105. The top six — of 11 – earned state championship berths with Hermon High School coming in third at 130 points, followed by 136 for Medomak Valley High School of Waldoboro, 136 for Caribou, and 140 for Ellsworth.
Four boys from the region ran in the Class C North championship.
Dexter Regional High School senior Trevor Speed came in 63rd among 92 entrants with his time of 22:46.14. Tiger seniors David Race and Allen Gatchell were 74th and 89th with respective times of 24:02.85 and 31:14.46.
Piscataquis Community High School junior Jorgen Halvorsen, who practiced with and raced with Foxcroft Academy in the regular season, came in 64th in the Class C meet with his time of 22:46.94.
Bucksport High School junior William Hileman finished in first place by about 42 seconds in 16:14.26.
George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill placed first among 10 full teams with 60 points. Sumner Memorial High School of East Sullivan finished as the runner-up with 82 points, followed by 102 for Limestone Community School/Maine School of Science and Mathematics with 102. 106 for Orono High School, and Bucksport in the fifth and final state-qualifying spot with a score of 111 points.
Three Dexter girls ran in the Class C North championship.
Senior Annika King finished 37th among 83 entrants with her time of 25:24.51. Freshman Annabelle Peakes was right behind in 38th place at 25:28.71. Senior Emma Alexander was 45th in 26:32.08.
Orono junior Ruth White repeated as the Class C North champion, winning Saturday’s race by about 70 seconds in 17:51.42.
White helped Orono win the team championship with 29 points. The Houlton High School/Greater Houlton Christian Academy cooperative finished second among 10 full teams with a score of 51 points. The other three state championship qualifiers are third-place George Stevens with 90 points, 123 for Fort Kent Community High School, and 138 for Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.
